Personal Outdoor Plan – Expedition Planning
How much thought do you put into your adventures into the wilderness, do you have a Personal Outdoor Plan? If so, how comprehensive is it?
I am pretty sure you think about most of the following
- Sufficient warm clothing
- Planned your route
- Compass packed
- Some form of shelter
- Some form of location aid
- Well worn in boots
- Waterproof clothing
- A rucksack
- Camping stove
If you have thought of these things, then brilliant; they will undoubtedly help if you become isolated in the wilderness… However, they are no good if nobody knows you have left or where you are going and this is where a Person Outdoor Plan comes in.
What am I twittering on about?
In the military when any personnel are departing from their main unit location they always leave key elements of information that can be used to assist in their rescue should they become isolated. The exact information is obviously not something that can be put into the public domain, however there are some elements that are common sense.
Things like name, who you are travelling with, what equipment you have with you, where you are going etc. These kinds of details will assist those that are looking for you and perhaps more importantly, allow someone to raise the alarm in the first place.
What is a Personal Outdoor Plan?
Well, luckily there is a UK company, Survival Wisdom that has thought about all of these things for you. The company is run by some of my survival instructors from numerous courses throughout the years and includes the now famous John Hudson star of the Discovery Channel show “Dude, You’re Screwed”. John is who Bear Grylls wishes he was like; even Chuck Norris has John on speed dial for when he needs some hard hitting survival advice! John has trained pretty much anybody, who is anybody in the UK military survival world and is 100% the real deal!
The rest of the guys know everything there is to know about survival and genuinely wrote the manual for UK military survival, so they know what they are talking about. All of them have been involved in running survival courses for civilians and military alike all over the world and in all environments.
So what? Well that means they have spent more time looking for lost trainees in all environments, weathers and conditions than most people have had hot dinners! They know what kind of information will help you get rescued, FAST!
As they are such nice chaps and want to ensure you don’t become a statistic they give away a 100% free Personal Outdoor Plan. It can be found here and even better, a completed example that explains everything is here. You don’t need to give your email address, your credit card details or hand over your first-born child. They will give it to you for free, zip, zilch, nada! No catches!
I can lead a horse to water…
Please use these Personal Outdoor Plans and leave them with someone responsible who will raise the alarm if you don’t make it back on time. You will feel pretty stupid if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with no chance of rescue, all because you couldn’t be bothered to fill out a piece of paper! After all it is no good on your hard drive, print it out, fill it in and use red ink for the really important parts.
Once you have filled it out make 2 copies, one that stays with a responsible person (email a copy as well if you can) and one goes with you so that you know what rescuers will expect you to be doing. If you are feeling really keen then make a 3rd copy that can be taken away by rescue services; this leaves the original with your responsible person just in case your rescuers lose it.
That’s all on this post, but I do have plenty others survival articles, so stick around and have a read as they contain some great advice and information. If you like this post then please share and leave a comment below.
Until next time, take care and keep surviving.
